Review of New Toyota Lexus IS-F

Toyota’s luxury Lexus arm’s latest image car, the new Toyota Lexus IS-F, is a 400bhp V8 version of the IS model, and the first model to carry Lexus’ new ‘F’ badge, which signifies special performance versions – rather like BMW’s ‘M’ models. It has an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Indeed, the new Toyota Lexus IS-F is an all-new high-performance version of the popular Lexus IS 250 sport saloon. The car features unique styling and a substantial boost in power from a V8 powerplant.

The Lexus F designation identifies vehicles specifically designed and engineered for ultra-high performance and exceptional sports driving dynamics. F-badged models further emphasise Lexus’s pursuit of perfection and its aim to continuously push the limits of automobile engineering.

The new Toyota Lexus IS-F is powered by a sports-tuned 5.0-litre V8 that delivers more than 400 DIN hp and 500 Nm of torque.

The IS-F engine is mated to the world's first eight-speed automatic gearbox. Acceleration from rest to 62mph takes 4.9 seconds and top speed is a governed 168mph. Carbon dioxide emissions of 290g/km position the IS-F as one of the cleanest sports saloons in its class, as well as one of the most powerful.

In keeping with its sporting character, the IS-F is the first Lexus to feature switchable VDIM (Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management). This lets the driver select Normal, Sport or Off settings according to preference.

The interior of the IS-F receives unique styling treatment with aluminium and composite trim and special surface treatments.

The instrument panel includes an oil-temperature gauge and shift indicator-lights, while the "F" logo is prominent on the steering wheel and rear-centre console.

In addition to the usual Lexus standards of comfort and convenience, the interior of the IS-F features specially shaped and trimmed seats, which hold the driver comfortably and securely in place. The special sport seats are available in black or a unique high-contrast white and black trim.

"The intent of creating the IS-F was not to be a competitor to other performance saloons," said Bob Carter, Lexus US Division Group Vice President and General Manager.

“Rather, the goal was to create a true performance saloon in a uniquely Lexus way, one that is totally authentic with a unique interpretation of raw driving thrill at all speeds and provides a whole new definition of 'usable power.”
